We are living in a time of uncertainty and panic. COVID-19 has strangled the entire worlds economy. Normally calm individuals, are panicking to buy large amounts of toilet paper, sanitizers, cleaners, masks, gloves and lastly food. This stress on the supply chain is making some things scarce in communities causing more panic…. after all, who wants to run out of toilet paper. Food is flying off the shelves, all the while, the message from various governments trying to reassure the masses that the supply chain is strong, falls on deaf ears.
Supply chain refers to a system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. Supply chain activities involve the transformation of natural resources, raw materials and components into a finished product that is delivered to the end customer.
Make no mistake, the world is in crisis. This pandemic is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the function of our entire world, which is causing human, material, and economic loss that far exceeds our ability to cope using our own resources.
It is imperative that each country secures it’s own supply chain as the world hunkers down for the foreseeable future to flatten the curve of this pandemic. But what about the rural communities? What about First Nations communities that are virtually cut off from the main supply chains? We have all been ordered to stay home, socially distance ourselves and flatten the curve. But these communities still need help. They need supplies just as much as the rest of us. It is critical to get supplies to them, while taking every precaution to not spread the virus to these high risk communities where they do not have access to proper healthcare. When patients travelled outside of their remote communities for medical appointments back in 2009, they were identified as the source of H1N1 outbreaks within their communities. Bringing an outside person into the community is no different.
